In 1855, Captain George McClellan traveled to Europe for the Military Commission to study the latest in European military practices. From his observations, McClellan designed a modification of an Eastern European saddle. This saddle was less expensive to produce and simpler than the existing cavalry-issued saddle. It was lighter, yet sturdy enough to provide good support to rider and his gear. In addition, it was more comfortable for less robust horses.
