The Texas type saddle was purchased and used extensively by the South and was found on every battlefield. It was manufactured by the thousands by arsenals and civilian contractors. It was very popular among Confederate troopers. There are many variations of this saddle from skeleton-rigged to highly embellished. Mexican War soldiers found these saddles superior to those they were issued. The Texas saddle was manufactured into the 20th century and is the ancestor of the modern Western saddle.
